The act of contrition is not a feeling of sorrow, shame or anxiety. Is a provision of intelligence and free will, not sensitivity. It is an attitude of all the sinful person. Is repentance, sorrow, grief over the sin committed by the same offense to God.

Contrition is "sorrow of soul and detestation of sin with the resolution of sinning no more," according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Perfect contrition remits venial and mortal sins. It is motivated by love of God, in heartfelt sorrow generated in the higher powers, intelligence and will, in the offense to God, Supreme Being.
The act of repentance or contrition should be healthy, inner, supernatural, universal and maximum terms of valuation.
According to the theology and the Church of contrition is the first and most important act of repentance. The act of contrition would be a return to the Father and the Prodigal Son, being that "of the contrition of the heart depends on the truth of penance."
